SOMERS, N.Y. – Other than hospitals, there are few free standing facilities that provide physical therapy, heart disease treatment and other health services under one roof.

Somers Physical Medicine Rehabilitation and Health Enhancement Cardiac Relief is one of those rare, multi-faceted locations where patients receive hands-on, supervised care in a relaxed atmosphere in Bailey Court, across from the historic Elephant Hotel on Route 202 in Somers.

Open since November, the business, which is led by a trio of experienced principals, Dr. Rick Jinete (director of physical therapy), Dr. Eric Lippman (medical director) and Vincent Houston (director of cardiac rehab), is having a "coming out party" this week, according to Houston, to alert the community about their programs and state-of-the-art equipment.

"We saw a great opportunity to put everyone's skills together," said Lippman, director of rehabilitation medicine at Peninsula Hospital in Queens.

Houston has run a cardiac rehabilitation center in Yonkers for 25 years, two in Yorktown and two others in Manhattan. He said only 10 percent of patients who could benefit from cardiac therapy, which is covered by insurance companies, receive it.

"It's just not on a lot of doctor's radar," said Houston, a Hartsdale resident.

One of the facility's services is its Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) treatments – a non-invasive therapy given to patients with chronic angina.

"It's not quite the magic bullet but it gives the effects of exercise without exercising," Houston said, explaining it decreases episodes of chest pain, increases blood flow to the heart and other organs and enhances quality of life.

In addition, Somers Physical Medicine Rehabilitation features the first Accu-Stretch, a motorized stretching device invented by Houston that gives an individual the ability to stretch from 45 to 180 degrees without the help of any assistance.

Occupational and speech therapy and acupuncture are among the other services offered Monday through Friday. For further information, call (914) 617-8500.
